Civil Rights Issue Blog Entry #6

Entry 6

My civil rights issue is about equal rights for the LGBT community. Another student's civil rights issue is about equal rights for women. These topics are similar because they both involve groups that are normal people ranging from race and religion. Both groups want the same rights as the heterosexual male. Both groups have organizations ("Women for Women International" and "The LGBT Center"). However, these two groups are different as well. The women's rights movement has had more effectiveness in terms of what has been changed since the movement began. Also, unfortunately, there is a lot more support for women's right across the world then for gay rights. There are more groups for women's rights and they are bigger. Although the LGBT community has a lot of support, women's rights has more.

  • What stance (if any) has President Obama taken on this issue? Any actions?
Obama is very supportive of gay rights especially gay marriage. In addition, he is the first president of the United States to keep openly supportive. In 2013 during Gay Pride month he appealed to Congress to pass the bill to ban any discrimination against gays int he workforce. On the other hand, Obama was first in favor of marriage being only with a woman and a man but has publicly announced his change in heart.

1. Identify and profile one leader of the contemporary movement you are examining.
A successful gay rights activist today is Daniel Savage. He is the creator of the "It Get's Better" project and is the writer of the advice column "Savage Love" for homosexuals struggling or needing advice.

2. How visible is this leader in the media? Explain.
Dan Savage is very involved in media mostly because of the "It Get's Better" project. It was created by him and his husband because of the suicide of 15 year old Billy Lucas due to bullying for his sexual orientation. The project is many videos submitted by adults talking about how things get better as a homosexual and bullying isn't forever. By November 2013 the videos had a total of 5 Million views.

3. Compare/contrast his/her approach to those of at least two leaders we are studying in class.
Daniel Savage also is involved in a lot of gay right activist groups that protest peacefully. This is similar to Martin Luther King's strong belief in non-violence as well as. An African American leader during the civil rights era like Stokely Carmichael's involvement was very different from Daniel's because of his strong belief in violence to help achieve success in getting equal rights.

1. Based on the experiences of your group, in what ways has and hasn't King's dream been fulfilled? Be specific!
-In Martin Luther King's speech, he addresses how he wants African American children and white children to be "brothers" and be friends without caring about each others' races. For many homosexuals and transgenders this specific wish has been fulfilled, but not for all. Many LGBT individuals don't struggle with judgement and unequal treatment among their peers because of their sexual orientation.
2. What strategies and approaches are being used now by people pursuing your cause? Include specific examples.
-To pursue the cause of equal rights for the LGBT community, many peaceful protests outside anti-gay churches and city halls.
3. Compare and contrast to approaches we are studying. New approaches? Continuations?
-This approach is similar to approaches made by African Americans during the Civil Rights era because both groups protested and fought peacefully for their causes. The approaches are different because their goals are different and protests for African American rights were bigger and in more areas than those of LGBT rights.

Civil Rights Issue Blog Entry #2

Entry 2.
1. How does the particular group you are studying experience discrimination or lack of rights today? Compare/contrast to the Jim Crow era.
-The LGBT community under goes a lot of discrimination. Homophobic and anti-gay groups and people can be found in churches, schools, and workplaces. In a study it was found that 15-43 percent of gay people and 90 percent of transgenders experienced harassment and/or mistreatment at their jobs because of their sexuality and gender identity. 17% of gay people and transgenders were fired because of it. In schools, 9 out of 10 LGBT students have experienced some form of harassment. This is similar to the treatment of African Americans before the Civil Rights Movement because of discrimination and unfair treatment due to the color of their skin. Both groups of people are completely innocent and have no control over their race and sexual orientation. Similar to anti-black groups in the Jim Crow era such as the KKK and other smaller communities, many anti-gay church groups exist. The Westboro Baptist Church is known for its aggressiveness against homosexuality. They've protested, picketed funerals and desecrated the American flag. The LGBT community and African Americans experienced similar acts of hatred because of who they are.

Civil Rights Issue Blog Entry #1:

Entry 1.
A current civil rights issue that is existent today is gay marriage and other LGBT rights. Gay marriage is legal in only 13 countries and only 18 states in the US. Groups that help support gay rights include the Council of Global Equality and the International Lesbian Gay Association (ILGA). Current efforts to protect the civil rights of LGBTs include the Employment Discrimination Act which stops job discrimination based on sexual orientation. Also, the Hate Crimes Prevention Act which expands federal jurisdiction over hate crimes committed because of the victims sexuality, gender, race, disability, and religion. I care about this topic because it has always bothered me that two people can not get married due to the fact that they are the same gender. I think that the fact that individuals in the LGBT community still to this day are restricted from many things solely because they are not straight is absurd.
